EU_FishingBoats.jpg5. New EU legislation was introduced in December this year that requires consumers to be provided with details of the fishing gear used to catch their seafood as well as a more precise indication of the catch area or where the product was farmed. For fishery products caught in the NEA (FAO Fishing Area 27) and the Mediterranean and Black Sea (FAO Fishing Area 37), the name of the sub area or division is to be provided. These additions build on the requirements implemented a year ago to provide consumers with the commercial designation, species, production method and catch area for unprocessed seafood products, in addition to whether the product has been defrosted and the date of minimum durability for some products. Authorities anticipate the regulations will have a big impact on the entire seafood supply chain.
