Top 10 stories that defined Europe’s 2014 seafood industry

EU_FishingBoats.jpg8. In something of a David versus Goliath battle, retail seafood company The Saucy Fish Co. scored a victory against German discount giant Aldi Stores in the form of a copycat claim settlement. Events started back in May when the U.K.-based subsidiary of Icelandic Seachill took out a High Court injunction against Aldi’s new range of fish and sauce combinations called “Saucy Salmon,” claiming the line infringed its registered trademarks. Saucy Fish also raised concerns that the packaging and design features of Aldi’s products were confusingly similar to its own award-winning brand, arguing that they could mislead consumers into believing they are actually buying Saucy Fish products or the products are part of a brand agreement with Aldi. Saucy Fish has taken the seafood industry by storm since its launch more than four years ago with sales now fast approaching GBP 35 million (EUR 44.6 million/USD 54.6 million). Despite the settlement, 2014 was a very good year for Aldi and discounters in general. They continued to surpass all other U.K. supermarkets in terms of growth of sales and market share.
