10 March, 2010 - Boston-based Slade Gorton & Co. on Wednesday partnered with The Atlantic Red Crab Co. to supply the only Marine Stewardship Council-certified crab harvested and produced in the United States.

Red crabs are harvested in the Atlantic’s deep cold waters of in depths of 2,000 feet or more. They are landed live then processed in a state-of-the-art facility in New Bedford, Mass. The estimated catch of the species, which has a red-tinted meat, is more than 4.5 million pounds in 2010.

“The coldwater red crab is a wonderful and popular product that is a major addition to our expanding line of sustainable seafood species,” said Kim Gorton, president of Slade Gorton, which will handle all red crab sales and distribution.

Slade Gorton sold more than 100 million pounds of seafood worth USD 325 million last year and has offices in Boston, Los Angeles, Chicago and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
